John F. Kennedy

(May 29, 1917November 22, 1963)

John F. Kennedy is the author of Why England Slept (1940), A Nation of Immigrants (1958), and, most significantly, Profiles in Courage (1956, winner of the Pulitzer Prize in biography). Profiles concentrates on eight senators who made decisions of conscience that were initially unpopular. Those senators include: John Quincy AdamsDaniel Webster, Thomas Hart Benton, and Sam Houston. A best seller, the book was later made into a television series of the same name.

Kennedy lived at seven DC locations. His first, on 31st Street, was a house he shared with Eunice and Billy Sutton from 1947 to 1950 while serving as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Massachusetts’s 11th District. He lived on 34th Street from 1950 to 1953 while still in Congress. The Dent Place location, leased from Blair Childs, was his home from 1953 to 1955 while Kennedy was a U.S. Senator. He rented Hickory Hill from 1955 to 1957 (and the following year it was leased to his brother Robert Kennedy). The P Street address was his briefest; leased from Joseph Bryan, Kennedy was here only in 1957. He lived on N Street from 1958 to 1960, finishing up his term as U.S. Senator, and in the White House while serving as the 35th President of the United States, from 1961 to 1963.

Major events during his presidency include the Bay of Pigs Invasion, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the building of the Berlin Wall, and the early stages of the War in Vietnam. He was the only Catholic president, and the only President to have won a Pulitzer Prize. He was assassinated in 1963 in Dallas, Texas.
